I was working as a tech for Bonham (Jason Bonham) the band were recording an album in LA at the studio One on One (I think it was called) We were all mad Steve Lukather and Jeff Porcaro fans and at that time most Sunday nights they were playing at the Baked Potato so we used to see them play most weeks. So with the Luke connection it was only a matter of time till we were hooked up with Bob Bradshaw and Mike McGuire. The band and I visited the shop and purchase 5 guitars, all Valley arts, 2 Luke’s, 2 M series Telecasters and a custom m series bass (with a midi output) I think it was August 1989 The bass had an Australian MIDI mod, it was a contact between the fret and bridge to negate any MIDI delay (you can see the frets are cut into four to give individual string/bridge contact)
Ian Hatton the guitarist used his Luke as his main guitar, mine was sometimes a bit of a back up. The band and I travel all over the USA and Canada on tour. While in Canada the temperatures were approx -35 degrees F this caused the finish to crackle giving a vintage look early on in its life.
The two Lukather guitars we bought on the same day were not concurrent serial numbers.
mine being VA 0462 and Ian’s VA 0361 I was under the impression that the Lukather model only had the volume control no tone.
I did take the neck off mine to take to a Lukather show and got him to sign the headstock, that was in 2010 we were both surprised that the VA necks were Warmouth.
I did pick up VA californian a few years back, what an amazing guitar plays and sounds so good with its Seymour Duncan pickups
